NICHOL, Douglas Johnson

Born 1 September 1911, Bombala NSW. Died 3 August 1990, Bendoc Victoria.

Married Edith Maud Watling, born 24 November 1915 daughter of Winifred Ann Campbell and Harold F Watling on 6 September 1941.

Their children are:

Janette born 3 December 1944, married Geoffrey Groves

David born 1947, married Denise Collins

Douglas was a grazier in and around Bendoc, Victoria having purchased and inherited land. He was also a Shire Councillor for many years on the Orbost Shire Council, where his father owned “holding paddocks” for stock being taken to the Orbost railhead. His son David now farms the original Nichol properties in Bendoc.

Doug’s widow, Edith wrote: “Doug lived on his parents property named “Pretty Point” helping to run and improve the property over many years. He acquired his own property “Gleniris” from is Aunt Eliza Ann Davidson (nee Nichol) in 1940. During the war he also maintained the property of his brother Arthur whilst he was absent fighting in the Second World War.”

Doug ran both properties “Pretty Point” & “Gleniris”, adjoining properties successfully for many years. Later he purchased “The Grange” which was a former Nichol property and then “Pretty Point” which are now all combined as “Gleniris”, owned and run by Doug’s son, David and his family. Hard work, honesty and integrity won all Doug achieved in his life.
